Chapter 4

Over the next few days Smith settled in really well. He felt like one of the guys, part of the family.

Robb would spend the morning in his study. He had told Smith that he owned a few lucrative businesses that needed tending to, even if he had appointed CEOs to them. The afternoons were when he and the others would train. It varied between guns and weaponry training to hand-to-hand combat. Smith loved watching his mate through it all. The pressed slacks and pristine shirt were for the morning, then as soon as lunch was over he would change into loose-fitting shorts and trainers. A sweaty man was a sexy man in Smith’s mind. Watching Robb made Smith want to collect it and put it in his bath.

But this morning he sat at the kitchen table on his laptop. He figured he should order some things for his mate. He wanted to surprise the man. A few toys should do that no problem. That was until a scream was heard from out back. Screams were bad. They never equated to something good, unless it was him in bed with his mate.

He went cold as he knew that voice well. He had heard it a lot over the past few days. Colin. It seemed then autopilot went on. He ran from the kitchen in the direction of the sound. He made a thought to grab the gun by the back door. He knew he would need it.

He ran from the back door and toward the sounds of a fight.

* * * * Manoeuvring around the forest floor was relatively easy. He was following the sounds of the fight. He was distantly aware that getting back might be more difficult though. Regardless he pushed on, knowing he had to save his son-in-law, even if that was still weird to say…or think.

Smith knew he had to save the man. Growing up living with an entire vampire coven and his mother had been a real eye-opener for him. The older vampires would tell him it was his duty to look out for people. They said a true man looked after his loved ones. He agreed wholeheartedly. Hence his training had begun.

As soon as he hit puberty, Smith had begun training the vampires his age. They taught him combat training, as well as using weaponry of all varieties. Guns, swords, daggers, and just about anything in his near vicinity to help incapacitate his opponent. The number of vases he had smashed using them in practice of defence had earned him one or two spells of being grounded by his mother. But most of all it taught him how to fight vampires. As a human, Smith was snail-pace slow compared to any vampires. That was a huge disadvantage if he ever had to fight one. But years of training and he now knew how to beat a vampire by using his speed against him. Smith hoped his halfcocked idea would work because Colin’s life was in the balance.
